The installation instructions described
in this document are for Windows 95 only, NOT Windows 98. Windows 98 includes built-in
drivers for the IR-210. See Tech Note: 99030195
for Windows 98 installation instructions. The information on Direct Cable Connect included
in this document applies to both Windows 95 and 98.
The IR-210 is compatible with the Infrared Device Utilities built-in
to Microsoft Windows 95. These utilities, such as "Direct Cable Connect" would
be used in place of the TranXit software, and would require the host and remote computers
to both be running Windows 95. You cannot run both the TranXit and Windows 95 IR Utilites
at the same time.
What You Will Need
- Irmate IR-210 Driver Disks
- Microsoft Windows 95 CD-ROM or Installation Disks
Disable the TranXit Software
If the TranXit software has already been installed, it must be
disabled to allow the IR-210 to function with the Windows 95 IR Utilities. If you have not
already installed the TranXit application, skip this section.
1. Open an MS-DOS prompt. You should be in the Windows directory.
Type: "edit system.ini".
2. Scroll down through the file and find the [386Enh] section.
3. Insert "REM" statements in front of the TranXit drivers
as shown below:
[386Enh]
;~~~~~~ Drivers added for TranXit ~~~~~
REM device=C:\TRANXIT\pcomm2.386
REM device=C:\TRANXIT\pumair.386
;~~~~~~ TranXit End ~~~~~~
4. Save the file and Exit the editor.
5. Exit the MS-DOS prompt and restart the system.
If you wish to switch back to the TranXit software later, simply
remove these "REM" statements and restart the system.
Installing the Windows 95 Drivers
1. Insert the Irmate IR-210 Windows 95 driver disk into the floppy
drive of your computer. This disk is supplied with your Irmate IR-210. If you do not have
this disk, a new one can be created with the file: WIN95DRV.ZIP available on the
Tekram Web site: www.tekram.com.
2. With your mouse, maneuver through the following menus in Windows
95: Start -> Run
3. 3. Type A:\setup and click on "OK", or press the
<Enter> key, then wait for Windows 95 to copy files from the disk.
4. Click "Next".
5. In the Add Infrared Device Wizard screen, select the Tekram as the
manufacturer name and IRMate-210 (IR-210) as the model number.
6. Click "Next".
7. Select the port that your IRMate IR-210 device is physically
connected to.
8. Click "Next".
9. Select the radio button labeled Use default ports, then click on
"Next". Windows 95 will install your infrared device and its associated ports.
Make a note of the "Infrared Serial (COM) port" that Windows will use for the
Infrared device (Usually COM4). This will be the "Virtual" port used by
application programs to communicate through the IR-210.
10. In the last Add Infrared Device Wizard screen, click on
"Finish".
11. Remove the disk from your floppy drive, then SHUTDOWN and RESTART
the computer.
12. Upon reboot, enter the Control Panel and click on
"Infrared". The Irmate should be listed.
Validating the Win95 IR Driver Installation
- After the computer reboots, enter the Control Panel and click on
the "Infrared" icon. You should see a screen similar to that below:

- To actually validate that the IR-210 is functioning properly, you
will need to connect to another system running Windows 95, also with the Infrared drivers
installed for its own IR device. Place both systems' IR devices in the correct
orientation. The systems should connect as such:

Notice that the remote system is found. It's now clear that the
Infrared device is functional and the driver installation was successful.
If a connection cannot be established, check the "Device
Manager" by clicking the "System" icon in the Control Panel. Click
"Ports". You should see a display similar to that below. Any Port with a
Hardware Conflict will appear with an exclamation point in front of it. If this is the
case, double click the Port for information on how to fix the problem.
Printing to an IR-Capable Printer
You can print directly to an IR-Capable Printer from Windows 95,
using the "Virtual LPT port" (usually LPT3) created during the Infrared driver
install:
1. First, you must install the Infrared capable printer via
Control Panel -> Printers -> Add Printer. Make sure to install the new printer on
the Infrared LPT port (usually LPT3).
2. Orient the IR-210 so that it faces the Printer's Infrared Sensor.
3. Execute any application which has the Print option (e.g.
PaintBrush). And Print to the new printer.
Exchanging Data Between Two Computers
There are several Utilites available to facilitate data exchange
under Windows 95. The following applications have been used successfully over an IR
communications link with the IRMate IR-210:
Windows 95 Direct Cable Connection (DCC), HyperTerminal, DynaComm
and Carbon Copy.
The Direct Cable Connection (DCC) application is included with
Windows 95. We will use this application to demonstrate data exchange through an Infrared
connection. This program must be installed on both computers:
1. Check the Accessories menu to see if Direct Cable Connection
is installed. If DCC is already installed, proceed to step 3.
2. To install DCC, double-click the "Add/Remove Programs"
icon in the Control Panel. Click the "Windows Setup" tab and choose
"Communications". Click the "Details" button and check "Dial-Up
Networking" and "Direct Cable Connection". Click O.K. Follow the
instructions on-screen to install the DCC application.
3. You must select one of the systems to be the "Host",
that is, the computer that will provide "shared resources" to the Guest system,
thereby allowing access to its files and file transfer between the two computers. DCC
cannot establish a connection unless file sharing is enabled on the Host system. You can
set the File and Print Sharing options by clicking on the "Network" icon in the
Control Panel. You must reboot the computer after enabling Sharing.
4. To select a folder to share on the Host Computer, double click the
My Computer icon. Select the folder to share and click the right mouse button. Select
"Sharing". Enter a name for the shared drive and what rights the Guest system
will have on this drive (Full or Read-Only). A small hand will then be shown under the
drive, indicating it is a shared resource.
5. To start the DCC application, first activate the Infrared Monitor
by double-clicking the Infrared icon in the Control Panel.
6. Start the DCC application on the computer designated as the Host
system. Click the "Change" button to set the Host/Guest option to Host, as well
as choose the COM port specified during the IR driver installation (usually COM4). After
these options are set, click the "Finish" button. The Host computer is now
waiting for the Guest system to connect.
7. Start the DCC application on the Guest system. Click the
"Change" button to set the Host/Guest option to Guest. Make sure the COM port
shown is the same as the "Infrared Serial (COM) port" specified during the IR
driver installation on this system. Click "Finish" to attempt a connection.
8. At this point, the shared resources available on the Host system
should be available to the Guest, and the status should show "Connected via Serial
cable on COM4".
Once the connection between the Host and Guest systems is achieved,
data exchange is carried out by simply dragging and dropping files from the folders on the
Host system to the local hard drive's folders. Data can be exchanged in both directions,
provided that File Sharing is set to "Full" on the Host system.
Trouble-Shooting Info:
- You must have the NetBEUI protocol and the Client for
Microsoft Networks installed on both systems, along with the Dial-Up Adapter as
shown below. The File and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks must be installed
on the HOST system. Remember, a connection cannot be made unless there is at least 1
shared resource on the HOST system.
